2. The cologne cathedral being a gothic cathedral, shows multiple points and reaches to eternity as some would say.The dark exterior shows a sense of mystery. The building and the color scheme of the building shows a sense of antiquity. The color of the cologne cathedral makes it as though it is dark, and as I said mysterious. It makes you wonder what kind of message is really trying to be sent out. The florence cathedral on the other hand is bright colors and although it is vertically built it gives off the warm feeling as though the colors are more inviting. On the inside of the cologne cathedral there is a sense of openness and light as if it is shining down from heaven. It is said that this cathedral is a "symbol of the new German governments positions as a pro- monarch."
3. The florence cathedral is seen to be more of a classical language incorporated into some gothic elements, whereas the amiens cathedral is completely gothic style. The amiens cathedral is based more on geometric matrixes and reaching upward rather than only reaching up to the heavens like the florence cathedral. It is based on its height and width. The use of crossing squares which are long horizontal spaces broke by 2 crossing x's. It is a new reality of repetition and shows a lifting sequence to infinity as we spoke about in class. It had a central spine, flying buttresses, vaults, and a labyrinth. Due to the height of these two interior and exteriors it shows the scale in relation to people. It is somewhat of a symbol or how much bigger God and religion is than humans.
question 2.
Medieval interior spaces included a main central hallway or chamber. The fireplace was found on a hearth or where the louver was located. On the opposite side of the building a platform sat where the tables were lined up. Interior chapels were known to be important parts of these interior spaces. The spaces were lit with torches, candles, lanterns, etc. The ground was either stone or tile. With the decorations being such an important part there was wainscot on the bottom and multiple paintings on the top of the walls.
